As the subject says, I'm in need of cables for these units (four). What are
the pinouts for such a cable? Are there crossed wires similar to a nul modem
cable or are both ends standard printer connections? Could a person not make
his own? I have sufficient parts on hand for such a project.

Thanks

Take one of the units to a local computer repair center
and ask them for assistance.

All Backpack drives use standard DB25 parallel printer cabling. Any good
quality printer cable will work. Source:

My next question. Could these backpacks be used with a hard drive as well. I
notice there are some wires cutoff on the ribbon cable between the board and
drive. Apparantly a CDrom doesn't need as many conductors as a HD. This
cable would have to be replaced I expect.

Thanks

You want to install a hard drive in a Backpack CD-ROM enclosure?

I think it will probably work, but I'd try it with the existing ribbon
cable first because the cutoff wires are likely for master/slave
selection (i.e. not applicable) and/or printer pass-through. You are
unlikely to damage anything, even if it doesn't work - but you will be
experimenting in unknown territory, so don't blame me if something nasty
happens ;-)

A more cautious approach might be to obtain a Backpack hard drive
enclosure first, so you can see if it uses the same internal wiring as
the CD-ROM version.

Not to worry. I've a number of old smaller HD's around. No great loss.

If I could find one to look at.
