I will be purchasing a firewall for my home LAN and I will be setting up
a VPN so that I can access my home computer when I am away from home.
Does that preclude me from using Remote Desktop or can Remote Desktop be
used through a VPN? Do both computers need to be using XP? Presently
my home computer runs ows 2000 and my laptop runs XP.

Thanks
KK

To remotely access a PC with Remote Desktop (RDP) the PC must be running XP
Pro or Windows 2003/Windows 2000 Server running Terminal Server.

If your W2K box is not running Terminal Server then look at using UltraVNC
as an alternative. You can download the server, client and encryption plug
in from...

Yes you can run Remote Desktop through a VPN tunnel. I have done that
through a PPTP VPN tunnel. I currently run RDP through a Secure Shell (SSH)
tunnel using a private/public key pair for authentication. You can also run
UltraVNC (or any flavor of VNC) through a VPN or SSH tunnel.
