I have 1 PC and 1 laptop in my home, 1 printer and a labelmaker printer. I
tried to setup a network using my ISP's cable modem, a cable/dsl router, and
the network setup wizard. I wanted to set it up so the printers could be used
by each computer, however I could not access the network through the router.
So I set up the PC to act as server, resulting in the dependancy for the PC
to be on for the laptop to have internet. Is there any way to make the router
work like I want it to? Can each computer have internet through the router
while still having access to each printer? Oh and by the way neither printer
are networkable (they only have USB ports).

You should be able to enjoy shared Internet access, plus shared printer access,
if you connect both computers directly to the router, and either connect both
printers directly to the router or to the computers. What type of connection is
available on each printer - parallel interface or USB connector?

Chuck,

I have an older model linksys router that has 5 Ethernet ports, both
printers only have usb connections. I have tried to setup a home network
using the Network Setup wizard, but I was unable to even access the network (
"network unavailable or you do not have access right" is the message that
comes up) I tried the Ping technique and came up with packet's lost every
time. I run WinXP pro on both systems, Norton AV on one and Norton Internet
Security on the other. Is there a router setting I need to change? I am a
noob to this kind of stuff.

Generally, it's not going to be a router problem. The portion of the router
that affects the ability of the computers to provide file sharing / visibility
("network unavailable or you do not have access right") has no filtering
capability. Your personal firewalls are good possibilities though.

You need to start with my troubleshooting guide. Read all linked articles -
follow the links - and provide the "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" logs
here. That will help us decide what to look at next.
