I go to the box where it says check for Word as your email editor. But
the little box never gets hightlighted, so I can't check it. What
gives? How can I get a word count in my e-mail?

Are you using the same version of Outlook and Word?

After furious head scratching, (e-mail address removed) asked:

Actually, I just upgraded to Word 2003. Is that the problem? I have to
upgrade Outlook, too. Geez!

It has been the case for years and years that the versions of Outlook and
Word must match in order to use Word as the mail editor. Outlook 2000 would
use Word 97/98 as well as 2000, but that's the last time it was allowed.
