Who do I contact to get a Windows XP home disk? The OS was
installed in a partition on the laptop drive that failed. So there
was never an actual CD for Windows XP Home. I have a new hard drive
coming in and have a valid OS Key on the bottom of the laptop.
Can I get one from MS or does it have to come from HP?
Came with the laptop? Then HP must have had a method to either make a
restoration set, it came with it or they had some other method of getting
the OS and software (as it was sold to you) back on it. They have no choice
in the matter. That's part of their deal.
You should look on the HP support web pages for how you are supposed to
restore your particular model to a 'as purchased' state. If it turns out
the method was purely "HDD ONLY" <- contact them for alternatives. They
may - for a small fee - sell you the restoration CD/DVDs for your model of
laptop.
You *might* be able to get away with locating a generic OEM version of the
Windows XP CD and install using it with the number on the bottom of your
laptop - but you might not as well. I suppose it is worth a shot from your
point of view - but know that does not include the drivers for the hardware
(most likely some will have to be downloaded from HP) and it certainly will
not include any software beyond Windows XP Home.
