NAV already installed on purchase, stopped working after few months, advised to do system restore, took 3 attempts to retrieve it but then stopped working after further few months, system restore did not bring it back, downloaded 30 day trialware (2004) to try to resolve problem thinking it would activate it, trialware now finished but NAV still not working.

Reinstall Norton AntiVirus from original installation media.
By "installed on purchase", usually OEMs like Dell, etc. do include NAV
installed, but it is not the full subscription version unless you specified
so in your order. You have to then purchase the subscription from Symantec.
Did you do this?
NAV is not free.

Try one of these options:

Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus (~$11 and up)
http://www.symantec.com/

Kaspersky Anti-Virus (~$49.95 and up)
http://www.kaspersky.com/products.html

Panda Antivirus Titanium (~$39.95 and up)
http://www.pandasoftware.com/
(Free Online Scanner: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/)

AVG 6.0 Anti-Virus System (Free and up)
http://www.grisoft.com/

McAfee VirusScan (~$11 and up)
http://www.mcafee.com/

AntiVir (Free and up)
http://www.free-av.com/

avast! 4 (Free and up)
http://www.avast.com/

Trend Micro (~$49.95 and up)
http://www.trendmicro.com/
(Free Online Scanner:

I would go to Norton's Website and check their Tech Support Page. Most
pre-installed Norton Anti-virus is a trial version, but the trial version
should not stop working. Traditionally, when the trial period is over you
cannot get any updates to the tables, but the program will work. The
knowledgebase on their site is extensive. Go to www.norton.com.
