Native mode required for upgrade to 2003?

Do we have to go to native mode before upgrading schema,
domain and servers to 2003 or can we do this at a later
stage.

We are going to perform a domain rename later and I guess
we need to go native in 2003 before that.

No for upgrade, For Domain rename you have to be in Windows Server 2003
Native and not running SMS2003 or Exchange 2000.
