I am looking to change our computer naming scheme at our company. Currently
I just usually use the employee's name, but as you know that can get a
little outdated when people leave the company. So I am asking for some good
convenient naming schemes that would be good to use. Thanks.

3 letter department abbreviation followed by the date put in service.

i.e. HRD50605 = the computer is in the Human resources department and put
into service on the 5th of June 2005.

I would suggest if the computer was ever moved to another department just
rename the HRD part of the name and you will still be able to get an idea of
how old the computer is by the put in service date.

A couple of characters for the site or department , a couple to indicate the
OS (assuming that you have a selection) and a sequential number which will
also indicate which are the older machines

We use the employee name and have no problem with it. It's not uncommon
for employees to move from one department to another, but their machines
go with them. When an employee leaves, the machine will be re-imaged and
geiven a new name before it's assigned to a new employee. When a machine
is upgraded, the new machine is given the name that the old one had, and
the old one is wiped or re-imaged.
