Re Excel97 on WinXP pro w/ SR-2. My keyboard is a Microsoft Brand PS2
connector keyboard that is connected to the computer through PS2 to USB
converter cable.

For years, the up/down right/left navigation arrows moved the active
cell selection. I've been using the same hardware configuration of
months. Suddenly, it seems that the up/down right/left navigation
arrows move the worksheet window with the active cell remaining the
same. Another copy of Excel97 on another WinXP machine behaves as
expected.

A search of Tools|Options does not seem to bring up any menu to control
the actions of the up/down right/left navigation arrows.

I don't think the problem is in the PS2 to USB cable conversion, because
I've not noted any functionality change in another other application.

It sounds like you have the Scroll Lock key engaged....just press it again.

Does that help?

Thank you.. I've been intense user of Excel for years, and I never
previously known about impact of scroll lock key on Excel or other programs.
