Ok... there's all this talk about the havoc being created by this new worm,
so I have a question? Hasn't the anti-virus programs already set on one's
computer killed that worm? And if not, why not. I just read where the
earlier worm (Mydoom A) searches the internet and updates itself on infected
computers. Wouldn't a virus protection program have detected that first
virus already? I'm not getting this.

You'd be surprised how many people either

i) don't use AV software
ii) don't have the latest virus definitions installed
iii) don't check frequently enough for latest virus definitions
iv) practise unsafe computing (i.e. opening attachments they shouldn't be,
etc)

a combination of all these factors will lead to the propagation of
viruses...

A anti-virus is only as smart as it's defination file. If
it's not in the file the av just watches it happen, they
will not protect you.

Only if you got updates to its signatures since about breakfast time on
Tuesday. The updates were out very quickly, but *do* depend on your
getting and installing them. They only protect against viruses that
were known about at the time the update was prepared
