Every time I change it, it eventually goes back to January 8th 2003. Do
I have a virus? Has my computer been hacked in some way? How do I fix
this problem?

The battery on your motherboard is dead or dying. Look in your manual for
how to replace it.

Is that possible considering my laptop is less than 5 months old? This
time changes when the computer is plugged in and while I'm working with
it.

Is it possible my motherboard is shot? I've been hearing this clicking
at least once or twice a week since I got it

Are you connected to the internet or a network when it changes? Have you
checked the correct time zone is set?

Anything is possible, but most motherboards are static items that make no
sound. Try and link it to some activity that is happening at the time of the
sound. If you'd like a guess without any information having been given by
yourself to make it an educated one I'd consider that your hard disk may
have powered down (to save battery power) and the sounds are when it comes
back into use as it spins up.

Replace your CMOS battery.

Yes.

Contact the manufacturer for support. Sounds like it may be a hardware
issue.

In the future please quote what you are replying to.

Thanks,

As it is quite new it should be on warranty. You should contact the
manufacturer or where you bought it for support. What you have desribed
sounds like it's most likely a hardware problem.

There are other possible causes. Have you set the time to synchronise to an
Internet time server? Are you on a corporate network that uses Active
Directory?

Directory?

I noticed the internet server on some past threads but my clock doesn't
have that option to check. Just a button for daylight savings time. I
did do something suggested in a past thread that has been working for
the last 1/2 hour and that is to change the time in the BIOS. I hit f2
before logging on and changed the time and date. Does that mean it's
fixed or is that just a temporary solution? I also noticed that the
titles of many of the folders in my documents folder have changed from
a standard black font to a blue font. What does that mean? I believe I
am on a corporate network server since this is my work computer. I'd
really like to avoid having to send it back to them because they hold
it for over a week and I can't afford to be without my computer for
that long. They are not very tech savy and their solution for
everything is a full reinstall.

Absolutely. In fact, if hardware is going to fail it will usually do so
pretty quickly or go for years. Since this is a new laptop (and
therefore isn't a quick fix like it would be on a desktop) immediately
call the mftr.'s tech support and get it fixed. Your new laptop should
work perfectly for a long time and this error has nothing to do with
Windows - it is hardware-related.

of course as soon as I post this the time goes right back to 2003. What
should I do? I really want to avoid sending it across country if I can
fix it myself I'd like to do that.

If you logon to most corporate networks they will sync the time on your
computer to a server on the network. It is unlikely this is the cause of
your problem. I doubt the network server is several years out of date :-)
The next time the time hiccups reboot and go into the BIOS again. If the
time is out here as well it is most likely a hardware problem and the
computer needs repair at worst or a new CMOS battery at best.

He's got a laptop with other symptoms of hardware problems. He just
doesn't want to do the necessary - send the laptop back - because it's
a corporate thing and will take a while. He's going to dither around
until the laptop doesn't boot at all.

I called Dell and the laptop is still under warranty. They are sending
a tech out to my house tomorrow to check it out. I'll check back in
tomorrow to follow up and document the problem for posterity. Thanks
all for the feedback.

Postscript: So the Dell guy came today. He replaced the motherboard
battery. I told him that the clock has been working fine since I went
into my bios and restored the defaults but he said that the battery was
probably faulty anyway. Thanks all for the help. On to other problems.

Glad to hear you got it fixed.
