on a new document
although my margin is set to 6.5 my text will only go out to 6.
any ideas?

Does the paragraph have a right indent? Are there paragraph or line breaks
at the ends of the lines?

No. The margin and indent markers are set correctly as is the page set up. As
an example, you can type several rows of the same letter. They are all going
to end at 6 rather than 6.5. You can choose any justification. This only
happens on new documents.

Is there a text box or graphic (without a border) in the right margin?
Note that it will be easier to see this if you enable the "Text
boundaries" option on the View tab of Tools | Options. Alternatively,
you can click the Select Objects button on the Drawing toolbar and see
if you can select some invisible object on the right of your document.
If you find something, just delete it. Then open the normal.dot
template as a document (via File | Open) and delete the object there,
too. For instructions, see:

I have discovered that somehow my column width is defaulting to 6 instead of
6.5. Can you tell me how to change it? Thanks for all your help.
