It was originally blue and than somehow turned red and remained so after a
system recovery was performed. Anyone know what this is all aboutÉ

I believe what you are seeing is just an indication that the drive is almost
full. I'm not certain at what level of free space that it turns red but it
isn't anything to be concerned about if the drive isn't being actively
written to.

The red bar means that the disk is full or nearly full.
If it bothers you unassigned a drive letter in Disk Manager.

Thanks!

I have nearly the same problem except I cannot do backups, "not enough
space". In displaying backup drive ( total sp = 9.99 gig) only about 3.5 gig
listed when displaying programs on drive , 3.4 is Dell that came with sys.,
and only 12 meg unused.
Can someone tell me what to erase or clr.

Dell Dim E521, 160 gig HD, 1 Gig Mem.

Try running the disk cleanup utility. It will take care of temporary Windows
files and temporary IE files and other accumulated stuff. You could also
temporarily turn off system restore and then turn it back on. If it works
like XP, turning it off will delete all of the files for the restore points
(naturally you won't be able to do a System Restore until a new restore
point is created...so be careful with that).

Lastly, depending on the version of Vista you have you could be accumulating
shadow files (used to restore old versions of, for example, Word documents).
That feature is not available for the home versions of Vista but
interestingly enough, Vista still collects those files. That eats up disk
space and it's kind of annoying.

I have tried this previously, It lists the recycle bin when clicking on
cleanup and states clearing it will result in 0 bytes being cleared. I went
ahead and performed the operation anyway. Made no difference.

For what it's worth "JMR" and "Tim" I ditto your problem "JMR" . I thought I
could get some help on line from techs at HP but I can"t seem to find a link
to assist me on my waranty and calling for support on the telephone is
entirely a new and different adventure. takes almost as long as it would to
fly to India and get an interpreter. "SPA"

I am having exactly the same problem. I called Dell, and they concluded that
the problem is a Vista problem. It seems that the restore points, or perhaps
shadow files, are not being erased. I continue to have a red bar showing on
my recovery drive, and constantly have the pop-up telling me that my recovery
drive is full. Can anyone help??

Your Recovery Disk is generally a small partition created by the computer
manufacturer to store the files needed to return your computer to a factory
default condition. It should not be used for anything else. If you were
provided with (or made) recovery DVDs you can delete it and expand your C: drive
to use the space. However, I would not recommend this -- it is such a very
small space (< 10 GB?). If the red bar bothers you go to Computer Management >
Disk Management and unassign a drive letter and you won't see the drive at all.

Thanks. I don't mind the drive showing with the other drives, it's the
pop-up informing me that it's full which is very annoying. Is there any way
I can turn that off?

Peter

Not that I know of (doesn't mean it can't be done) other than unassigning a
drive letter.
