My Pictures Folder keep replicating images!

Every time I open the "My Pictures" folder in Windows XP,
the operating system *spontaneously copies* the
contents. This means that after I've opened the folder
several times, I end up with copy(1), copy(2), copy(3),
etc.

I have found two other online references to this problem,
both of them posted within the past month. They are at:

http://www.globetechnology.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.2003022
4.gtss1/BNStory/Technology/

http://www.globeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040211.g
tss4feb11/BNPrint/Troubleshooter/

I hope someone can tell me what is going on! The problem
is recent and I don't want to have to reformat my HDD if
I can avoid it.

Thanks.

The links you cited do not open when I click on them.
You have a problem, obviously, but this is the first time since XP started
that this kind of problem has been reported here.
Can you go back and provide valid links to the other online references about
this problem so we can look at them.

Hi Yves,

Here are the links,

I could certainly be incorrect...but I'm betting
it's the same old *click/drag* problem...

Maybe the following info will help:

It happens occasionally to most anyone who
is trying to multiple select by holding the Ctrl
or Shift key while left clicking to select the
image files.

The copies are created when you fail to
completely release the mouse button before
you move the pointer to another file. If a group
of selected files is dragged...even the slightest
bit...the next mouse click will produce copies
of all the previously highlighted files.

It's somewhat easier if you have your Folder
Options set to Single Click...this way you can
select/deselect a file with just a mouse over
and you don't have to click. For multiples you
still have to hold...Ctrl or Shift.

No click...no drag...no copy...maybe that's
your solution.

If you wish to delete all the files in a folder
you could try the following:

Go to...Edit / Select All...or type...Ctrl / A...

With all files selected...go to...File / Delete...
or press your Delete key...or...right click the
group and choose "Delete".

Hi John.
I was thinking about the same thing, but he seems to describe a different
problem. Something I had not seen reported before and kind of odd.

Yves,

The links do work perfectly. I just copied and pasted
them into my browser. Just be sure that you copy and
paste THE ENTIRE LINK. I notice that in my newsgroup
window, the link is truncated across two lines. If that
is also the case for you, you will need to copy and paste
the first line, then copy and paste the second line after
it (excluding the > character).

Alternately, you can find these links yourself. Just go
to Google and do the following search:

"Pictures copy spontaneously in Windows XP"

(Be sure to include the "" quotation marks)

Hi Sharon,

I've now received e-mails from several other XP users who
continue to experience this problem.

Just to recap: whenever I open my My Pictures folder, I
can sit back and watch the files replicate themselves.
This is NOT a result of accidental mouse slips, NOR is it
due to a virus. I am a computer software technician.
The files replicate SPONTANEOUSLY and without any user
input. After the folder has been closed and opened
sevearl times, I am left with a ridiculour number of
copies.

In my original message, I posted links to another user
who describes the same problem. From what I can tell,
all of us began experiencing this problem in March 2004
(i.e. last month). Prior to that time, it was not an
issue. So, I am led to wonder whether it is the result
of a recent Windows Update. At this point, I'm
completely stumped. The problem seems to make no sense
and no one seems to be able to shed any light on it. ANY
SUGGESTIONS as to where or how to proceed are more than
welcome!

Please reply to (e-mail address removed) as well as to the
newsgroup.

Thanks,

Steven

Steven,

I forwarded your message to someone at Microsoft.
If I receive any info that will help solve your problem...
I'll post it in this newsgroup.
