I am using My Photos to download photo files from my digital camera. My problem is when I want to delete the photo files from the program it replicates them faster than I can delete them! I select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on the image with the mouse. Then use the "Delete these files" command. No sooner are they deleted then another set is replicated on the screen. This dosen't happen with other photo programs that I've used. Why does this happen and what can I do to fix this problem?????

Get better mouse control. Ctrl + Mouse movement of more than 4 pxs = Copy selected files. Though in this case they will normally be prefaced by "Copy Of ..." but if you are also deleting then maybe the copy doesn't need to rename the files as there are no files of that name forcing a rename.

Use Ctrl + Space. File menu - Delete

Maybe the following info will help:

It happens occasionally to most anyone who
is trying to multiple select by holding the Ctrl
or Shift key while left clicking to select the
image files.

The copies are created when you fail to
completely release the mouse button before
you move the pointer to another file. If a group
of selected files is dragged...even the slightest
bit...the next mouse click will produce copies
of all the previously highlighted files.

It's somewhat easier if you have your Folder
Options set to Single Click...this way you can
select/deselect a file with just a mouse over
and you don't have to click. For multiples you
still have to hold...Ctrl or Shift.

No click...no drag...no copy...maybe that's
your solution.

If you wish to delete all the files in a folder
you could try the following:

Go to...Edit / Select All...or type...Ctrl / A...

With all files selected...go to...File / Delete...
or press your Delete key...or...right click the
group and choose "Delete".

Hi John,
I'll try to go a little slower using the mouse. I tried the info from the first respondant but that didn't seem to work. It would even replicate trying to remove just one file at a time. I archived to CD the photos I wanted save then did a "Select All" + Delete command to get rid of all the photo files (275) so I can start with a clean slate. I'm going to download more files from my camera now to see what happens. I've printed your recommendations for reference,
Thanks!

Try the single click option that I suggested...
then you can select a file with a simple
"mouse over" and you do not have to click.

Open a folder and go to:
....Tools / Folder Options / General tab...

"Single Click To Open An Item" / Apply / OK.

Now...if you simply place your pointer on
an object...it will be selected as though you
clicked on it.

Also...you can search for *copy and only
delete the unwanted copies if you wish...
here's how to do it:

How to search for and delete unwanted "copies"
of your image files.

Open the folder that the images are saved in and
left click the "Search" button on your toolbar.

(If you are viewing the files from within an editing
program and do not know where the folder is...right
click one of the image files and from the menu...
choose...Properties. The path to the folder will be
on the "General" tab at "Location".)

In the search pane...select..."All files and folders"

In the "All or part of the file name" field...enter...

*copy

(Yes. you need the asterisk.)

Now...left click the "Search" button.

When the search is complete...go to...Edit / Select All...

Then go to...File / Delete.

You will see a dialog box asking you if you are sure
you wish to delete the files...click Yes.

Now...left click the "Back" button on your toolbar.

Now the remaining files should be your originals.

If you deleted the wrong files...recover them from
your recycle bin now.

That's it.

John,
Thanks again, I've printed your instructions for the next time I get into the photo editing situation. Probably not for a couple of days though.

You're welcome.

You'll find that it's much easier to do than to explain...
