My pc hangs! and even crashes!

My computer hangs at irregular intervals.
I'm not so so sure if it a full-blown crash but what I do know is that I
lose all input device connectivity - the cursor is stuck on the screen and
the keyboard does not work.
a lot of times, like when you load up Xp and come to the account selection
screen,the mouse and keyboard have stopped responding altogether.
Please note that when these 'hangs' happen,the pc just freezes - sometimes
returning back to normal and sometimes not.

Please help.

could be cpu over heating, check your temps
 
You should also check to see if you can boot into safe
mode to remove the possibility of a driver or virus issue.
