Kori

It came with the computer and no matter where I click on
the icon (on the desktop or in the programs file) it
won't open and goes to 'paint has encountered a problem
and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience'
it just won't let me go to it no matter what! anyone
think they can help me any way here?

Make sure that there are no instances of MSPaint running.

Then go to Start, Run and then type: regedit

Locate this key in your registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint
Click on that key and delete it.
Exit the registry editor and re-open Paint.

Note you can save the registry key first by:
On the File menu, click Export.
In the File name box, type SaveKey, and then click Save.
Or create a system restore point prior to editing.
Note: If the registry key is not there, you can simply create one by going edit

Kori,

See this from Rick Rogers:

1) To fix Paint: Close any/all instances of MSPaint. Then start/run regedit, navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Hightlight (click on it) that key and delete it. Close the registry editor and reopen Paint.

Backup the registry key, in case: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/registry.htm

I did Rick's fix and it worked perfectly. I thought it was my Canon Digital Camera software, but no.
