After I install windows vista basic home edition it has gotten as far as
please wait till windows loads for the first time then my monitor comes up
saying no power source ( not sure if thats exact) switching to standby, but
my computer is clearly on and there is power. Once I go back and reinstall
the previous version of windows that was on it before the monitor works fine.
Why could this be does anyone know ?

This is not an unusual problem during the second and third stages of setup,
especially if you have an LCD monitor instead of a CRT monitor. Your video
card is selecting a resolution and/or refresh rate your monitor cannot
display and the monitor will go into a power-saving mode and go blank.
Patience is the key here, since in almost all cases Setup is indeed running
and if you are patient your computer will reboot once or twice more and the
display will be restored when Setup is complete.
