I just experienced the same problem. I have a P4 2.0GHz, 512MB DDR
PC2700, and a Chaintech GeForce4 4600ti VC. All of this is jacked
into an Asus P4B533 motherboard. I first realized the problem after
playing a game of C&C Generals online and rebooting to refresh the
computer. Only this time it restarted in 4-bit low mode. Never
happened before. So I downloaded the current NVidia drivers and
installed and restarted the computer. Low and behold it started
absolutely fine except this time my onboard ethernet adapter failed to
start. So I dug into my backup software and reinstalled the drivers
for the ethernet adapter, restarted and it worked fine. Although I
still did not know the cause of the problem I was happy to be back up
and running. Well this morning, I turned on the computer and would
you know the color was reset to 640X480 4-bit AGAIN!!!! Something is
not right. Could it be a virus or overheating. Checked case temps
and thing were running cool at 35C CPU and 33C Motherboard. not sure
about the video card though, but why lose the drivers like that? I'm
tempted to do a complete backup of important files and do a total
reformat and install on the PC. Still looking for info on the matter
so any advice would be appreciated.

Okay, there's a problem with the grafic card. What I'd really like to
know is what exactly is the problem. Is it a driver issue?
Overheating maybe? By the way, I played another game of C&C Generals
and the same thing happened. I restarted to refresh the system and it
acted like it ignored the fresh install of the Nvidia drivers and
reset to 4-bit mode. I'm inclined to think it's a memory problem on
the VC itself, but I doubt it. The only constant I could find after
trying to recreate the problem is after running a grafix intensive
game like Generals. Also after doing more research on the web one
particular person who had the same problem as I did, also had the same
exact model motherboard and an Nvidia card. Even if I end up buying a
new card or whatever, I'd like to know what exactly is happening so I
can spread the word to others. Thanks again.
