At some point yesterday this started happening.

When I either open the "Computer" entry in the start menu or explore to my
computer I see not only what I would expect to (all the drives, etc) but
also the entire contents of my user folder. These are not copied items but
rather shortcuts to them. If I rename one of the items in my user folder the
name is changed in the computer window. The items all work; clicking on a
folder shortcut opens the folder. I just don't want them. I expect it's just
some registry entry that's changed (not by me).

Strange or what. Please tell me how to fix it - it's very anoying. I only
want to see the usual items.

Thanks.

Try using 'System Restore' to a point prior to the problem.

Otherwise check under these 2 registry keys for (deletable) 'user folder'
related entries

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\MyComputer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace

Export any entries you delete as a precaution first.
