the computer in question is stand alone running XP Home.
The my documents directory is read-only and when I try to
remove this setting it appears to be removing the read-
only attribute on it and sub-directories showing the
various documents however this is not working and it
remains readonly. Also there is an alias to 'my
documents' called 'owners mydocuments'. Can anyone shed
light on what the user has done. The user is the system
administrator. Attrib at a dos level doesn't show the
readonly flag.

thanks

If the attrib command does not show the read-only
attribute as set then it is not set.
The user interface of explorer does not show this
attibute on folders, it just provides a switch for use
in setting/unsetting the attribute on contained files.

Why do you feel this attribute is a problem ?
It is probably NTFS permissions that you need to
adjust if you are having problems writing there.

Thanks Roger

when I check the properties of my documents using explorer
read only is checked. When the user (who is the
owner/supervisor) opens any word document that is in my
documents it prompts to say the document is in use by
another user, does he want to continue. If you say yes it
will allow you to save back to the original document.

I will review next time I see the user
Penny
