Hi there

I have been trying to get help since the beginning of June on the following concern

I am new to using Windows XP, and I saved a copy of a database in the My Documents and Settings, as it is a shared database. The My Documents folder is seen in 2 places - the desktop and in the hard drive. I have since discovered by doing a search for the database name that there are 2 databases with the exact same name in the exact same location on the computer, showing exact same time of access, etc., but each database contains different information. How can this be

Hi Andrew

both files show the exact same information in every detail, but the scan showed 2 files of the exact same name and file location. I asked for the specific file name, and 2 files were found

Hello Microsoft and Andre

Actually, there was no difference - I looked meticulously closely, they both have the same size file and location, no differences whatsoever

I also discovered that I do have that same filename located in two different folders on the computer, one in the my documents, one in the native program file - I discovered that the file could not be accessed through the program file folder, as it is restricted access, so I moved it, fixed everyone else's access but forgot myself - sorry about that, such a silly user of computers (and to think I train people!

Thanks anyway, maybe it could help others..

I don't think this is possible for two documents with the same name to be in the same folder. What has happened is that one document is in your My Documents folders and this is a real document which you can copy and move around with it. You can take it with you in a zip drive or a CD. You can't delete this document because this what you have worked for all this time!

The other "document" is nothing more than a link/shortcut to the document. This is reflected/is what you see in "My Recent documents" menu item from the Start button. This link is stored here:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Recent

For USERNAME insert your own login name. This document can be deleted if you want to as it does not serve any purpose. It will be recreated when you open the document.

I think you said that the document is also on the desktop. If so then it should be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Desktop

Again, you can't delete this because this is what appears on your desktop.

If it is an Access Database then you will have two documents in your "My Documents". they may appear to share the same name but if you look at them closely, they have different extensions. One file will be very small. Don't delete any of these files. One file will have an extension .mdb.

Hope this helps.

Well then you need to delete the old files (or at least one file) before you get confused again.
