This has happened to me twice in the 3 months. I leave my system on all
night. In the morning I have been mysteriously logged off. The contents of
"My Documents" are gone. Fortunately my very critical files (MS Money) are
backed up but photos and other files are gone. Thinking that something may
be wrong with the My Document folders are am now using a new default folder
"Hanks Records" to store my files.

Any ideas as to the cause or ideas as to where the files have gone.

I assume no one in the household is sleepwalking?
You've done the obvious, checked recycle bin, searched for a missing known
file, run various online virus scans?

Done that. However I just ran a trojan horse finder and it found about 15
trojan horses. N-Case, Dylica, GSIM were some of the names. I had them all
deleted but I did have some problems afterwards. I was unable to open many
programs and could not use the ShutDown command. So I unplugged and
restarted. After the disk was checked for errors I was able to sign in.
There was a message that I needed to repair the resistry, click "yes" to
repair which I did and now all is well.

If you dont allready have you may benifit from installing a decent firewall;
Use Adaware and Spybot, after updating, on a regular basis
