My Docs icon is missing

The My Documents folder (and all my files) are right where they should be but the icon is no longer displayed when I open the My Computer folder (launched from Start Menu, etc.) ... I used to see two folders listed under the "Files Stored on This Computer" heading, My Documents and Shared Documents; only the 'Shared' icon displays now!?! Everything looks OK on the HDD, and I even logged-in as a different user but icon didn't display then either.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to reset this? Thanks.

James,

See if the DocFolderPaths is correctly set:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]

Add the following registry value, and then quit Registry Editor:
Value name: user name
Data type: REG_SZ
Value data: user profile\My Documents
Replace the user name and user profile environment variables with the literal values for each user who logs on to the computer.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I checked the DocFolderPaths and my User was completely missing ... any idea what could have caused this issue? And thank you VERY much!!

Hi James,

To get an account's My Documents folder to appear in Windows Explorer (Files
stored on this computer), add/edit a key in the DocFolderPaths branch like
so:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DocFolderPaths]
"user"="C:\Documents and Settings\user\My Documents"

In the right pane, right click and choose New/String Value. Give it the
name of the user. Double click the name once added and type in:
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\My Documents

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
Its My Computer page, check box for Files stored (also for Control
Panel) to be shown

That is the same problem I was having. Thank you, Thank you! Wonder how or

This thread dates from 2004 - but in 2009 I have the same problem (running XP
Pro, fully up to date).

My question is this: is it still necessary to go into the Registry and edit
it to restore the missing My Docs icons in the My Computer display? Or as
the KB article 319825 linked below refers to a hotfix, should I download the
hotfix, and will this solve the problem without my having to edit the
Registry manually? I'm nervous about messing with the registry.

And I am not sure if I have the exact literal values for the user name and
user profile of the account folder that is missing. The account name is
"Myname User", but the user name (shown in the desktop.ini file ) is "Myname
as user" and the user profile is, I think, also "Myname as user".

Any help - if anyone is still tracking this thread - would be appreciated!

Is your problem that if you login as yourself, open My Computer - you
do not see a Documents folder that belongs to you? Do you see the
Shared Documents folder?

Like on my computer login as Jose. If I open My Computer, I see
Shared Documents, Administrator's Documents and Jose's Documents.
This is good. Is the Documents folder that belongs to you missing
from the display?

Make sure it exists on the computer by looking on the C drive under
Documents and Settings. Every user should have a folder there
associated with their login.

If you look at that registry key, you should see an entry in the
DocFolderPaths for every login - including yours. If there is no
entry for you and the folder exists for you in Documents and Settings,
you will need to add it to the registry.

Don't be too afraid of the registry, just be careful. You can look
around all you want, but remember there is no "undo" or "quit without
saving" function in regedit.

When you open the registry, you can/should first choose File, Export.
At the bottom, be sure Export Range is All (the default). Export to
some file name you can find and remember, like Registry 050309.reg or
something. Leave the .reg extension so you will know what kind of
file it is later. It may take several minutes to export.

If you botch your registry edit, you can run regedit again and choose
File, Import to import the file you exported before the changes and
that will put everything back and then get more help or try again.

First, make sure the folder for your login actually exists on the C
drive in Documents and Settings. It really should be there. Then
open the registry and maneuver to the DocFolderPaths section as
indicated and see if there is an entry for your login. Look at the
entries that are already there and if you have to add a new value, it
should look just like the others except for the name part:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name goes here>\My Documents

It should match exactly what you see in C:\Document and Settings, for
you - it is just a path to a folder. My actual folder name in C:
\Documents and Settings is Jose.COMPUTER-WXYG879. Under that I have
my own My Documents folder just like every other user has their own My
Documents folder.

If your registry stuff is missing and you are still not comfortable
making the registry change, just say so and we can help out, or try to
find somebody that is.

Before somebody else says it, your computer may be infected with
malicious software. Please download Malwarebytes free software,
update it, and do a complete scan before messing with all this other
stuff.

....

You can put an icon on the desktop as a shortcut to anything
you can locate. Find your "My Documents" folder. Right click.
Create a shortcut. Move the shortcut to the desktop. If you don't
like the name the shortcut has, change it. If you don't like the icon
you get, right click on the shortcut and select Change Icon under
properties and pick another icon. You didn't have to touch

If I read the OP properly, his documents folder (like "Jose's
Documents") is missing from the My Computer window and it used to be
there. That is what I am talking about, but I have been wrong once.

Your idea will also work and may be just the ticket for what he wants
(and easier) but still leaves with the original problem if it is not
showing up in My Computer like it should. Fix the problem, not the
symptom.

Too bad you can't drag the new shortcut to My Computer!

Thanks for such a detailed and helpful response. First, let me say there's
no infection. I have Malwarebytes and other security and have done full
scans.

Here's a description of what I found. There are three accounts (me as
Admin, me as User, and my wife as User)

1) when I log on as br1anstorm User, and open the My Computer window, under
Files stored in this computer, I see only Shared Docs. If I go looking into
the C drive, I do find the br1anstorm User's My Docs in its usual place,

2) when I log on as "br1anstormAdministrator", and open My Computer, in the
Files stored on this computer I see icons for Shared Docs,
br1anstormAdministrator's docs, and my Wifes's docs - but no br1anstorm
User's docs icon. If I go looking on the C drive, under Docs & settings, I
find my profile as User and the My Docs folder is shown.

2) when my wife logs on, in My Computer she sees Shared Docs and her own My
Docs icons.

So the "missing one" is br1anstorm User's Docs - both in the display for
that account, and in the Admin display. The folder itself still exists and
is in the right place and perfectly normal. It just doesn't show in the My
Computer display.

I decided to be brave and try to edit the registry. I followed the steps in
this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/.

It worked - but only partially. I added a new registry entry for br1anstorm
user, exactly as the article advised. Now, when I log on as Administrator,
the icon does indeed show in My Computer for br1anstorm User's Docs as well
as the others. So that's back to normal.

But when I log on as br1anstorm User, the My Computer screen still only
shows Shared Docs, and doesn't list br1anstorm User's docs.

This isn't a disaster. But I'm still puzzled, as it is still abnormal, and
I'd like my computer to be running right.

This thread dates from 2004 - but in 2009 I have the same problem (running XP

I fear you've missed the point of my query. I know how to create shortcuts.
I don't need a shortcut on my desktop.

As Jose realised, the issue is that the My Docs icon for my User account has
disappeared from the "My Computer" screen in both my Admin account and my
User account. And you can't create a shortcut in the place where that icon
normally sits (I tried to do so, but the system won't allow it).

This is a problem known to Microsoft - see the KB article. So my question
really was - does the hotfix they offer now mean that this should be
installed rather than manually editing the registry?

Understood. At least you have made some progress.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I just have Jose and Administrator on
my computer and don't feel like adding another account!

The DocFolderPaths look fine for my simple system. I am a little
confused about your user setup, but I think it comes down to every
user is going to need a folder in Documents and Settings (which I
think you have) and a matching registry entry with that path in it.
It sounds like you are missing one entry in that registry
DocFolderPaths setting?

There is no foul in experimenting by adding a new entry to the
DocFolderPaths section, if it doesn't do what you want, just delete it
or try something else. I am not sure if a reboot will be required or
not. Registry edit warning apply - export a backup copy first in case
something goes horribly wrong.

Maybe somebody else gets it, but not me for the moment.

Thanks John, but no, that article does not relate to the problem I've got.
The My Docs icon is present on my desktop. And it is present in Windows

But it does NOT appear in the "My Computer" screen when I open that window.
(That's the window which shows the icons for the Files on this computer; the
Hard Disc Drive(s); any other Drives; and any other devices eg USB connected.
