I have Gateway 830GM when I go to the control panel to change my backgroud
display I can't get into it I got help from two Gateway Techs, but what the
suggest didn't work. The first Tech said that my background tab was
corrupted because I can't access it and it's grayed out. I followed the
steps he gave me and they didn't work and the second guy's didn't either. So
how do I get into and fix this.

I *think* I understand you as saying that your Display properties control
panel does not work at all?
Or you don't have a "Desktop" tab in Display Properties?

Is the computer virus/malware-free? Be sure:

If the machine is really clean, then:

If you can't enable desktop backgrounds after a virus, MVP Kelly Theriot
has a fix. Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".
