My computer won't start

I have xp on both of my computers. One of my computers
will not start. When the computer is turned on, it says
there was an error loading operating system. It won't
let us do anything. We can open up DOS with an MS-DOS
boot disk, but from there I have no idea what to do. It
doesn't recognize that there is a D drive, so the XP disk
doesn't work to boot from. I would like to wipe my
system clean and start over, but have no idea how to go
about doing this. Anyone who has a clue, please help.
 
Set the bios to boot to the XP cd and insert your XP disk in the cd tray and
follow instructions. Jym
 
Have the small battery checked on the motherboard. sounds like the BIOS
settings are lost due to a bad battery there. I believe most of the
batteries used are "CR2032", available at walmart, radio shack, etc.

Try turning it on and press the delete key a few times right after it beeps.
Then choose the default settings , save and reboot. Should at least start
then.
