"My Computer" won't open

I seem to have lost the use of an external drive which the PC no longer
recognises - and worse I cannot open "My Computer" to see what is
recognised - any ideas welcomed?

Try going to the Run dialog box (Start --> Run) and type:
"C:/WINDOWS/explorer.exe" (w/o quotes). From Windows Explorer, you should
be able to get to My Computer

Run
chkdsk /r blah blah _yes_, This will require a reboot.
sfc /scannow
sfc /purgecache
chkdsk /f
