Clicking on MY COMPUTER takes minutes before all the files are displayed. This is particularly after restarting the computer. Once the files are displayed there doesn't appear to be a problem, but the first time after restarting is extremely slow. The system displays a torchlight as it searches for all the files
Is there a setting that can change this in XP Home?

Could be time to do a disk clean up. Once you get My Computer opened, right-click the
hard drive icon, properties, disk cleanup. It will take awhile to populate.

Whilst it wouldn't hurt to follow Mary's advice, it won't solve your
problem. Click Start > Run > type 'msconfig' (no quotes) > click the
services tab and uncheck 'Windows Image Acquisition'. OK out. Reboot and
problem solved.

Turning of WIA (according to MPT) will not help, that service has to do with
imaging devices, i.e. scanners, cams, etc, and they may (but not
necessarily) need to have this service on. If your imaging devices don't
work for some reason, be sure to turn this service back on.
