My Computer opens on bootup

Replace the screws in the side-panels. ;-)

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

Seriously, the chances are it's a program running at startup which is
causing this. msconfig may be of help, but not always. Download autoruns.exe
from http://www.sysinternals.com - this is a much better startup-monitor. Do
be a little careful over what you disable, as this is a very powerful
program.

Also could be due to a Trojan, or a startup-folder shortcut whose target has
'strayed' from the correct program.

Nice program - more complete than the win patrol I have. Still have the
problem - have no idea what the name of the file is that opens "my computer".

I am not a gamer - do have adobe, photoshop, and scan soft, a few utilities
and End Note - a bibliography program.

Run Dell E510 - 1 gig of memory. Have not been happy with it. No serial
port - won't run my trusty laser jet 4 - will get around to networking my old
computer.

Use McAfee - an update from Microsoft cut off my internet access when Norton
was on.

My logon doesn't offer much.

This is a perplexing problem.

When I boot my machine my computer opens. How can I stop this?

The following article's resolution may be applicable to your
situation even if the cause / symptoms are not 100% identical:

The "My Documents" folder automatically opens every time that
you log on to a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer

Be extremely careful if modifying the 'userinit' registry variable, BTW. If
you get it wrong you'll end-up with the computer continually logging you on
then off again in an endless loop, and this is very difficult to resolve.

Which does bring-in the point that spyware can cause these kinds of
symptoms. Try a scan with ad-awware.

BTW, the MyLogon link is just my sig, it's not intended for standalone or
home computers.

Note sure if this note was directed at me. Received another suggestion found
in MS #899865 - relating to my documents. I also run ad-aware professional.
As I said - have most protective utilities and use them.
