'My Computer, key freezes in a search loop, never finding anything

I upgraded from Millenium to XP Pro and installed as
a "new installation" to wipe out all previous files on
the computer. Computer is working well except for one
major problem...when I click on My Computer, a flashlight
starts "searching" for files and folders, and never finds
ANYTHING. The search would go on indefinitely if I
didn't manually stop it. The computer knows its hard
drive is partitioned (I checked to see if I could find
the drives, and I can), and can find files I've recently
saved, but My Computer key can't recognize anything.

HELP!!!!
