I have a PIV comp running windows 98 and win xp pro. Recently I had
installed an extra 128 mb ram chip. After installing when i run win xp
sometimes my computer just goes off without any warning. I took anti static
precautions, one point is that one ram module has 4 chips on it while the
new one has 8 chips on it. The BIOS recognises both as DDR 266 mhz ram
chips. Help what do i do? it's reccurence frequency varies from half an hour
to sometimes 2 hours of working time on the comp. This problem never occurs
when I am running win 98.

This could be a problem with the temperature of the CPU. Use a
hardware diagnosis tool to check this parameter.

It sounds like a flaky RAM module. XP taxes RAM a lot more than Windows 98
does. If you remove the new stick and run your system do you still have the
same problem? Most RAM unless it is really crap generic stuff has warranty.

It was the RAM that was giving problem, now I have less RAM but it's more
stable. Thanks a lot Harry and Thorsten.
