Sorry for the weird subject title, I'm just hoping to
catch someone's attention. Anytime I try to download
anything (pdf, exe, doc) I get the message "Internet
Explorer cannot download ______ from _________. Internet
Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The
requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found.
Please try again later"

I have tried EVERYTHING to make it work. I thought it
might be a problem with IE 6.0 so I deleted it and
reverted back to 5.0. Now I can't even download 6.0 back
to my system. I posted about a week ago and someone
suggested I check the Folder options settings. They were
all fine. I also have Norton antivirus and have run
several scans as well as my ScanDisk.

Now my scanner software is working and there have been
other little glitches I have noticed. Any help you can
give me would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Try this fix.

Make sure that these settings are set.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check
the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your
operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Henri, I have tried all of that, all of the boxes
for "confirm open after download" are checked. Any other
ideas? I'm desperate!

This is very often a Cache issue:

As you appear to be running Win 98 or ME, start the computer in MS-DOS mode. If you're running
Windows ME, that means starting up with a Boot disk.

Type the following lines from C:\ , pressing ENTER after each one:

cd windows
smartdrv
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree cookies

NOTE: Press Y if you are prompted to confirm any deletion

Type win (or 'exit'), or hit ctrl-alt-delete followed by clicking enter in order to return to
Windows

NOTE: This is assuming the path to these folders is the default one
Is they're located elsewhere/named differently, adapt the path accordingly.

Windows will create a new folder containing a brands new Index.dat file on reboot automatically.
