I am using windows 2000 professional. I updated some
downloads a few days ago. I got a mssage after that that
some sort of sockets, WinVNC, could not be initiated. I
also removed some pop-ups that I wasn't familiar with. I
have had the bellsouth DSL for about 10 days. After the
updating of the window files, I couldn't log onto the DSL.
Being the wise guy I am, I attempted to re-install the
windows 2000 software. The software has failed. I
cannot start the computer up at all.

Where do I go from here. Can I use a windows 98 boot
disk? I don't have a windows 2000 boot disk.

What is it you're wanting to do? What does "software has failed" mean? To do
a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

WinVNC is a program for allowing someone else on the network to take
control of your PC. I'd be very suspicious of how that got in the list
of startup services.

What did you download?
