I am having problems with the desktop icon for "MY Computer". When I click on
it the folder opens but does not populate with any folders. The window just
hangs and eventually I get an error message which requires me to choose "End
Now" in order to close the window. However I do not have this problem if I
use Windows Explorer to navigate my folders. this leads me to think that
there is a problem with the "MY Computer" link instead of the hard drive
itself. Any help would be appreciated.

The only time I have encountered similar problems have been when I have a
hard drive, CD-Rom, or other storage device that is not operating properly,
and when XP calls the devices when I double-click 'My Computer' the faulty
device causes Explorer to hang. The best way to determine if this is the
case or not is to temporarily pull devices, starting with externals, then
moving on to internals, one by one, and testing to see if the problem is
still present.

A similar situation ensues if you have persistant network drive mappings
which either (A) point to resources which are no longer present, or (B)
point to resources over a low speed connection which require additional time
to properly query. However, under these circumstances, 'My Computer' would
merely open much more slowly; it would not hang completely. The only way to
troubleshoot this is to start removing drive mappings and see if your
Explorer window doesn't pop up any more quickly.

My $.02.
