my backspace button....

I'm not a new user, but I'm having a problem with my
backspace button. I used to be able to highlight text
and delete my selection by pressing the backspace button,
but i can't do that anymore.
Did I accidentally turn some feature off???

Help!
 
Go to Tools, Options, Edit tab, and make sure "Typing replaces
selection" is checked.

So, by unchecking that item... does that mean the "insert"
key will be infunctional?

There are two separate items, one controlling whether the INS button
performs the EditPage command OR toggles between Insert mode and
Overtype mode, and one controlling typing replacing selection. Overtype
mode is not the same as typing replacing selection; Overtype mode means
that typing characters replaces non-selected text to the right of the
cursor.
