Mute sound in Win2000

In the Sound applet under the Audio tab, select your sound card and
click Apply. I suspect you have a different device selected for audio
playback. Then go back to the Sounds tab and see if the option to "Show
volume control on the taskbar" is available, and check it.

The computer is not mine, I'm just using it, I suspect there is no
sound card here . In "Audio" tab under "Sound playback" I have "No
playback devices", under "Sound recording" -"No sound recording
devices", under "MIDI music playback" - "MPU-401"

So what is it that you are trying to mute? You have no sound card (or
onboard sound on the motherboard) so you have no means of generating
noise. So just what noise are you trying to mute since the computer
isn't capable of making any (beyond the beeps from the speaker and from
hard drives and fans)? You cannot mute a device unless you actually
have it. How are you going to use mute on a telephone you don't have?

If you only have a speaker in the tower, the easiest way is to disconnect one of the wires.
