Must Logoff/Shutdown Twice -- How fix?

I am running XP Pro on a P3-733. Worked fine for a long time, but now it
will neither log off a user or shut down without performing the
operation twice; i.e., the Start, Shutdown, Shutdown or Start, Logoff,
Logoff sequences must be performed twice. Any suggestions on how to get
it working properly again? (I already have the system set to force
shutdown of hung programs after 5 seconds.)

I also have this problem and would appreciate a fix. It started about November after an XP update.
 
Please include the original text when you are responding to someone,
otherwise no one will have any idea of what you are talking about. Only

From your message, I will make the assumption that you are having a problem
