Must click default in Send/Receive....Why

Prior to reloading the backup onto my crashed hard drive, I used to be able
to just click "send/receive" and get all new emails. Now I have to use the
drop down menu and identify the default program. Why the change? How can I
fix it?

What drop down menu? We aren't good at reading your mind.

This often works: Click on Tools, then Accounts. Then do the following
for each email account: Click on the account, then Properties. If there
is no check mark in the box before Include this account when receiving
mail or synchronizing, click on this box and them Apply. Click on OK
and go on to the next account if there is one. Click on Close.
