Must change Workgroup Name when accessing multiple workgroups

Am am using XP Pro on my laptop, and for years, have taken for granted the
simplicity of having Windows detect other Workgroups on a network.
Unfortunately my hard drive recently crashed, and the manufacturer sent my
replacement without the operating system and drivers installed. After
installing OS and drivers again, I am unable to connect to other workgroups
without changing the name of the Workgroup on my laptop.

There is another very strange error that is most likely part of the same
problem. When I try to "View Workgroup Computers", I receive the message:
"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource....."

I have been through the Windows Knowledge Database, and this discussion
group, and have tried suggestions that looked closely related to my problem,
but I have found none on-point.

Any help that can be given will be greatly appreciated.

If your laptop is in a different workgroup than other computers on the LAN, then
it needs to be running as a browser. No browser for the workgroup = no ability
to see the workgroup that it's in, and no ability to see other workgroups.

Provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the laptop, and from one or
two other computers on the LAN, as a start. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Robert & Chuck:

You have both been extremely helpful. I, quite frankly, never heard of a
computer browser - it just always worked, so nothing to question. Here is
where I am - now where do I go:

When I try to start the Computer Browser, I get the message: "The Computer
Borwser on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop
automatically if they have no work to do....."

Found I had to download browstat for the new drive on the laptop, which did
turn up browstat errors. Chuck: I have read through your documentation, and
found it incredibly helpful. Maybe I am finally brain-dead, or some of the
information is over my head. It appears that I have both a master & backup
browser running. I am assuming this is because the old laptop disappeared and
a new one without browser took it's place. This caused some errors that look
conflicting, so I am stumped at this point. I am currently at my Home network
that only has two computers, and have copied the details from the Browstat &
IPConfig below. Would you mind terribly taking a look to see if anything
jumps out at you?

Any and all help greatly appreciated
Pati Lord

<SNIP>

Pati,

Well, to start, Home is running both IPX/SPX and NBT. A properly setup LAN
needs only NBT. Please remove IPX/SPX and restart both computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

Having a master and a backup browser is normal. Having both functions performed
by the same computer is normal too.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

As long as you can run both Home and Laptop as part of the Lord domain
(workgroup), you can and should disable the browser on Laptop, to prevent future
problems.

It's OK to change the workgroup name, but it isn't necessary. A
computer in any workgroup can access a computer in any workgroup.

To access another computer, no matter which workgroup either computer
is in, type the other computer's name in the Start | Run box in this
format:

\\computer
