Music stutters playing from 3rd hard disk

Can anyone help with this one?

I recently installed a new 2nd internal hard disk solely for backing up
music which is on an external drive. I get quite a bit of playback
stuttering on the new drive although none on either the external drive or on
the system drive. (I can copy files back from the backup disk to either the
external drive or to the system drive and get no stuttering playing them
back from those drives, so I am sure the backup files themselves are ok.)
Since it is a backup I probably shouldn't worry about it, but it is driving
me nuts.

The machine is Windows XP SP1, with all drivers up to date and plenty of
memory and speed. The new drive is the primary slave, with the system drive
as the primary master. The external drive is firewire.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The reason for stuttering is that the 2nd internal drive is Primary Slave.
Windows is on Primary Slave, thus you have some contention on the IDE interface.

I suggest you reconfigure the 2nd HDD as Secondary Master.
Any optical drives should be placed as Slaves [most used optical drive as Secondary Slave and least used as Primary Slave].

This way you have least contention for the IDE controller.

Thanks. I'll give your suggestion a try.

At the moment I have a DVD +/- R/RW as the secondary master with a tape
backup drive on the secondary slave. Probably good operation of the DVD
drive is more important than being able to play off the music backup drive.
Also, occasionally I have no stuttering at all on the music backup drive, so
I'm not sure the IDE contention is the whole story.

Considering the rest of my system setup, would you still suggest moving the
2nd HDD to Secondary Master?

I could buy another IDE interface card if necessary.

Thanks,
Tommy
