Anyone know of a good freebie for writing music (to paper, or the electronic
equivalent).

Basic requirement is a friendly editor to al,low easy, quick writing. If it
supports some translation of the sound that is a bonus, but not an absolute
necessity.

TIA

Good morning Bob

For writing music and save to .MIDI files, the best freeware program, in
my opinion is *ANVIL STUDIO* www.anvilstudio.com freeware version it not
able to print your music directly, this is only its limit. I was composed
several songs, concerts, arias and other with Anvil Studio, and I have
used the freeware version of *NOTE WORTHY COMPOSER* for printing,
importing MIDI files generated by Anvil Studio

I can only do staff entry, and I didn't think Anvil can do more than 2
staffs (staves?). Hav I got this wrong, I often need more - at least 4
voice tracks plus 2 accompaniments. Noteworthy still seems my best bet for
this, but it doesn't export midi well; losing pan, at least. I have to
recycle a tune through a very old cakewalk to do this, and cakewalk doesn't
do staff entry very well...... :-(

I would love to find an app that could do this

AFAIK there's no freeware version of Noteworthy, unless I missed something,
and I've been using it for ages. Their player is free, but it's only for
playing noteworthy files.

Finale Notepad

http://www.finalemusic.com/notepad/

is a very "light" version of the expensive and powerful Finale.

I think it should be mentioned, it is Nagware. Pop up dialog box
invites you to upgrade to the expensive and powerful Finale every
time you launch the app, you must click "continue".

IMHO, I also consider it a severe Crippleware, as it lacks the possibility
to import/export Midi-files, which I consider an obvious requirement for
almost any type of music program today.

Yes, but it is also registerware: you cannot install it without the
serial number that they email to you when you register to download
it. And just now, a month after I downloaded it, they sent me spam
at the unique email address I used.

So, registerware _and_ spamware. Is there such a category as
spamware?

And just now, a month after I downloaded it [Finale Lite], they sent me spam
at the unique email address I used.

My experience is different. I've used Finale Lite for a few years, and
even corresponded by email with the company about a couple of things.
I've *never* received a spam from them.

Perhaps there are others who can share their experiences.

I never got any, either.
