I am using Powerpoint 2002 and I have music attached to slide and it plays
but won't advance in the time speicifed. It is supposed to advance after 5
seconds and the music is to play for 19 slides. Any help will be appreciated.

Do you mean to say that you have set your slide to transition automatically
in 5 seconds and it does not do so?

How are you inserting the sound across 19 slides?

I would suggest that you insert the sound as a transition sound in the first
slide and set it to loop until next sound. On the 19th slide, choose the
Stop Sound option in the transitions sounds drop down list. This technique
will only work with WAV files.

More info here:

Do let us know if this resolves your problem or not?

To play music across multiple slides, there are some settings that are required.

Thank you for your suggestions, but I am using an mp3
file not a wav file. For some reason this is not working
on Powerpoint 2002 but does work on Powerpoint 2003. An
help will be appreciated.

Ignore the title of the link I provided. It is actually a fairly exhaustive
discussion of all your options. I'll bet that if you read through it you will
learn a lot and in the process you'll spot what you need to do with your MP3s.

Jessica, thank you for the update. Can you try these steps and get back:

1. Does the presentation not go to the next slide only after you inserted
the MP3? Try removing the MP3 - does that resolve the problem.

2. Can you hear the MP3 playing while waiting for the slide to go to the
next one. Does a mouse-click get you to the next slide?

3. Does this happen with this particular MP3 or does it happen with all
MP3s. Try using a WAV file - does that or does it not resolve the problem?
