Multiple XP operating systems loaded on C drive

During upgrade of a computer from '98 to XP Pro I was unable to access the XP system password. I attempted to log on as administrator but didn't have the correct password. I tried some of the workarounds such as no password and cntl+alt+del but still could not log on. I tried to repair the install but kept having the issue. Eventually, I installed another copy of the operating system and can access XP. I didn't replace the old copy because I wanted to try to recover my files, although I do have the data files backed up. My problem is that I'd like to get rid of one of the copies of the operating system but don't know what to do next.
 
okay pete. been there, done that, simply boot to safe mode by pressing F8 when booting. From safe mode the default Administrator account will be available. Providing you have not PW protected it, you should be able to log onto that System Administrator account and change any and all settings and then reboo
