Multiple XP listings during boot

While trying to figure out an internet connection problem I just posted
about ("No remote server connection..."), I tried a repair on repair on my
Main hard drive, D, but instead got into reinstalling the system on the
secondary hd (C), before I realized my error ((Later, I figured out how to
use bootcfg to get D listed in the repair modlule). So now when the
computer boots, the list has 3 entries, something like this:
Windows XP Home Edition [new installation on C]
Windows XP Home Edition [main drive - D]
XP set up [previous installation on C, which now returns a "hal.dll
missing" error message and stops, tho hal.dll in in system32 folder]

Based on Michael Stevens' MVP website, I have a boot.ini program that boots
off to D after a momentary pause, but now it's not being recognized, and the
top item on the list is booting. Something else not being recognized is the
"NumLock On" setting in the BIOS setup. Note: I haven't updated anything
(XP or BIOS) since this new install.

So, the goals are
1)get back to the list of 2 with the boot.ini file working as before,
booting to D
2)get the "Number lock on" recognized again

I'd be grateful for thoughts (or questions) about the problem and how to
solve it. thanks,

Update: After running repair on both hard drives, the Number Lock comes on
and the boot order reversed with D now on top (good). But there's still
three listings, two of them for C drive, and the latter of those two -- the
third listing -- still isn't working.
