Hi,

I am having a number of serious problems with a laptop PC running Win XP
home SP2, I will list the problems sequentially in the hope that someone can
help me. All I am trying to do is recover (transfer) three folders from the
desktop to an external hard drive connected via USB.

1. While attempting to split a large folder into a compressed archive in
several parts using WinRar I had a powercut. When I restarted the machine the
desktop was entirely covered in WinRar icons (60+).

2. I tried to delete the WinRar folders/icons but as soon as the desktop was
refreshed or Windows restarted then they appeared again.

3. Uninstalling WinRar did not work as all this did was replace the WinRar
icon with the standard MS icon for unknown file types.

4. The machine also slowed down from running normally to over twenty minutes
to start Windows or longer for other simple tasks.

5. I attempted to reinstall/repair the windows installation using the
manufacturer's recovery CD but this seems to have exacerbated the problem.

6. Now, even if I start the machine in Safe Mode the same icons appear all
over the desktop but this time there is also no task bar/start menu.

7. Although I have access to both the desktop and the external harddrive via
My Computer I am unable to either copy or drag and drop or copy and paste the
folders I want from the desktop onto the external hard drive.

Does anyone recognise this problem or are able to suggest a solution to
enable me to transfer these folders after which I will simply format the
drive and reinstall windows.

Many thanks,

Ben

can you elaborate on your issue #5?

Basically, it seems to me that ou incurred a simply system crash and those
files may be unrecoverable. You might have to use the recovery console.
What are the details for issue #5

You can try letting Windows repair itself... this is done by
running the CD just as if you were going to re-install Windows,
but instead opt for Repair (not Repair Console... keep going,
you'll get the Repair option eventually).

Or you can simply install another copy of XP on that
machine... it will put it into the Windows2 directory,
or something like that... after that, you might be able
to get to your files and get them off.

Another thing to try... a bootable disk.

Good luck... that's the most screwed-up computer
I've ever heard of that would still run.

yeh, this sounds like an option. but he claims that it didn't work. I think
he needs to repair his registry via the recovery console....
