Hi all,

I have been noticing that at times there are multiple Outlook processes
running in my task manager. Even when I close down Outlook, there may be
several processes still running. Does anyone know if this is normal? And if
so, why?

That is not normal. What version of Outlook are you using?
Any (faulty) add-in could cause this; which do you have installed?
Especially virus scanners that (try to) integrate with Outlook are a known
source of these issues.

Thanks for the reply Roady.

I am running Outlook 2003 SP2. I have several add-ins.

Business Contact Manager
Outlook Sync
Chapura Settings

and I am using TrendMicro (Client-Server for SMB) for antivirus.

As I am looking at it right now, there are 5 Outlook.exe sessions in task mgr.

Disable all your add-ins and see if it still hapens. Enable them one by one
to find the culprit.

I am having exactly the same problem, just started 3 days ago. Same version
of Outlook and everything. I have no addins unless Attensa is considered an
add in but it has been on there for a month with no problems. Have email sent
to MS about this problem but no reply yet.

Attensa is not in the add ins list and everything else is disabled. Can not
find a place to disable Attensa completely unless I uninstall, which if that
is a likely culprit I will do. I just hate to have to reenter my RSS feeds
all over.

Simply right click on the Attensa root folder and select Close. Then disable Attensa using the Attensa toolbar button option.

When I right click on the root folder I do not have the option of "close" but
I think I disabled Attensa from being linked to Outlook on the options menu.
There really is no "off/on" type setting in Attensa's tools folder or on the
toolbar that I can find. Another thing about Outlook is that it not only will
not close, but the application recovery program can't make it close either.
The only way is closes is to shut down the computer, restart Outlook in safe
mode. Then it will exit and restart a couple of times before it locks up
again. I have used the repair feature a couple of times including with the
install CD without any difference.

Locate outcmd.dat and rename it to.old when Outlook is closed. This will
reset the toolbar. When the toolbar is incorrectly modified by an add-in it
can cause Outlook to crash. While your at it also rename the extend.dat file
to .old which will reset the add-in-settings-cache.

You can use OutlookTools (free) to easily locate the correct folders that
keep those files;

When I right click on the root folder I do not have the option of
"close"
but
I think I disabled Attensa from being linked to Outlook on the
options
menu.
There really is no "off/on" type setting in Attensa's tools folder or
on
the
toolbar that I can find. Another thing about Outlook is that it not
only
will
not close, but the application recovery program can't make it close
either.
The only way is closes is to shut down the computer, restart Outlook
in
safe
mode. Then it will exit and restart a couple of times before it locks
up
again. I have used the repair feature a couple of times including
with the
install CD without any difference.

:

Simply right click on the Attensa root folder and select Close.
Then
disable Attensa using the Attensa toolbar button option.

After furious head scratching, JeffB asked:

| Attensa is not in the add ins list and everything else is
disabled.
| Can not find a place to disable Attensa completely unless I
| uninstall, which if that is a likely culprit I will do. I just
hate
| to have to reenter my RSS feeds all over.

Have

Roady,
May I also express my thanks for the advice. I've had this problem eating up the rather small memory on my laptop for some time. Now it seems to be sorted at last. Just wish I'd known about Outlook Tools before, and particularly the fix on the dat files. I shall spread the word.
Thx again - Tony L
