Multiple Operating Systems

I purchased a HP Pavilion 7950 desktop computer with Windows ME
installed. Win ME is a dog, very unstable, so it occurred to me to
install another operating system alongside it (the "L" that dare not
speak its name.) This other operating system is fast, stable, and runs
like a dream. Many Windows-based applications are not available for it,
however.

I hear that, with Windows XP, Microsoft has finally approached the
stability of this unspeakable "L," so I am encouraged to try it. I don't
want to erase the "L" system during installation, however. Since it does
not use either vfat or ntfs file systems, I suppose I need only say,
during installation, that I do not want this partition removed?

Any Windows installation overwrites the boot sector, so I already know
that it will be necessary to make a boot disk for the unpardonable OS
and restore the boot selector afterward.

Does that mean you're going to answer it? I hope so.

If you're upgrading from a previous version of Windows to Win XP,can you
leave partitions containing other filesystems alone? If this isn't
automatic, what options need to be selected? (This might be obvious from
the documentation that accompanies XP, but if the answer to the first
question is "No," I have some reservations about getting the product.)

No answer yet? Anyhow, while browsing Ebay I ordered the full version of
Win XP Pro. It's a good place to shop for software. (That's not a
question either.) But now that the deed is done, I'll buy all the
documentation I need to install it. If I run into trouble, I'll be back.

Apologies for the somewhat fecetious initial respnse. But the fact is that
your original post does not contain a question (other than the rhetoric
one). It was simply not clear what you wanted to ask.
