Hi all,

can XP be installed more than once into the same
partition, and still allow access to files from the
earlier installs?

thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg

It's not recommended - and shouldn't be attempted. You should see an error
message to that effect when trying to install a second copy of XP onto the
same partition.

I should add, I would never do this - I use partitions
- but need to help someone who says they have done it.

I have never heard of this being done in any previous
versions of Windows - it may be a new 'feature' in XP.

yes, as I thought (please see my own followup).

Can earlier files be accessed? The person says that
'access is denied'. I guess Administrator privilege may
be needed for this.

I'm going to try a Knoppix disk to see if that can get in.

Hi Greg

It's not a 'feature' of XP and a warning message will be issued before
continuing. If someone has done it, then all existing files/programs may
not be accessible because of the newer Registry being used.

Hi Greg

for the 'access is denied' error message, try here:

"How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Although, I can't guarantee that access to the files will be possible.

yup, that's pretty much what I thought - and many files
will have been overwritten in the new install anyway.

many thanks for your feedback -

Hi Greg

Yes - the programs would have lost their association(s) with the Registry
and the majority would be unusable - having to be reinstalled. And as you
say, files would have been overwritten and therefore to all intent and
purposes would have been lost.
