multiple desktops

After reinstalling windows xp home edition due to new cpu
and motherboard installation, I have mulyiple desktop
settings. for instance when i put a shortcut of excel on
my desktop I get two icons. that also includes items like
Norton system works. I don't know which programs to
delete, and would appreciate any help. Thanks

Could be XP just needs a Repair install after putting in new Hardware.
