multiple applications...

When I try to open a second Word Application, the shortcut is just opening a
second file in the same application window.

Isn't there a setting to tell it to use a second application window?

I can't seem to find it.

If you have Word 2002 or 2003, go to Tools > Options > View and check the
box for "Windows in Taskbar".

Otherwise, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/SDIMDI.htm.
 
Assuming Word 2002 or 2003, check the box for "Windows in Taskbar" on the
View tab of Tools | Options.
